Dear Readers,
As you might have noticed, this newsletter looks a bit different than those that landed in your inbox in the past. After a little bit of digging around and looking for a more comfortable spot to write to you from, I’ve decided to move everything over to this new home here on Substack. Why the change, you ask? Here’s the short version of the story…
Way back when the internet was very different than it is today, I used to write on a blog. I wrote about all sorts of things, some of which was centered around the illustration and creative work I was doing for the company which I then co-owned. I wrote about things that caught my eye, things I noticed that struck some sort of resonance with me, creatively or otherwise. I also wrote about some personal creative projects, like the year that I baked a different pie each week which I then delivered to an unsuspecting family member or friend. (I just re-read all of those posts got all the warm feels. It is still the most fulfilling project I have ever set out to complete.) It was an outpouring of snippets from my life, looks into my creative process, and thoughts on art and design and the things that kept me going. It was fun, and people seemed to dig it.
Then Instagram came along and got big, and the blog world fell by the wayside. Instagram was fun too, for a while, before the algorithms took control of everything. You probably know this story. Times change. The way people connect on the internet (or otherwise) seems to change as well. I’ve been thinking that I’d like to find an outlet where I could write and share again about my creative practice, about stories that have shaped me, about paying attention to life’s details. As I was looking around it seemed like substack has become a nice place were lots of people are writing and sharing some really great stuff, so here we are, and I’m looking forward to some regular dispatches.
What can you expect to read here? I’m planning to write a lot about illustration projects that I’m working on, including things that are in progress, that aren’t finished yet and are still a little rough around the edges. I’ll be writing about the things I’m paying attention to, that are inspiring me, and pushing me forward creatively. Who knows, maybe I’ll decide to do another year of weekly pies. If I do, you’ll be the first to know! We’ll just see how it evolves as we go. Mostly I’m excited to share a bit of me with you on a regular basis, again.
Thanks for being here, and being interested. About that, if you’re not actually interested you can unsubscribe at any time, of course. I’d hate to see you go, but no hard feelings.
If you’re not familiar with Substack, it’s pretty simple. If you are reading this in your email you are all set and you don’t need to do anything. You’ll continue to get these emails right here whenever I post something new. You also have the option of reading these on the Substack website or on the Substack app where you can access the full archives. I would suggest checking that out because it’s a very fun place to explore. There are loads of talented people using the platform to write about all sorts of interesting stuff.
That’s all for now. Just wanted to update you on what’s going on around here, and wish you a very happy Thanksgiving holiday!
Thanks for reading, see you next week,
Carrie
P.S. If you are in the need for a nice looking calendar to keep yourself on top of things in 2024, or maybe a nice gift for someone this holiday season there are a couple of new options currently available in my shop.
